Indexing Hard-drive(s) and Searching It(Them)

Does anybody know a piece of software that will scan my hard-drive for ASCII
data (not binary of course) and then build an index like a Web search
engine? I would like to be able to search my hard-drive not just by
filenames, but also by tokens that exist in files.

fgrep comes close to doing this, but it traverses the files in real time,
not off-line, therefore it is extremely slow. I need something that does the
computation in advance and builds an information-base.

TIA

Roy
