Under Windows or Mac OSX, you could probably look at the logs on the
desktop's end (or even the handheld -> Home -> HotSync -> Log). There is
usually a pop-up status message, but I wouldn't place much trust in it. I
had some inconsistencies when moving from an M130 to a Tungsten. I don't
think I received any warnings. If you abstain from using some of the 'new
features' there will be no conflicts between the two handhelds and the way
they handle (or 'extend') formats.
