Umm... trust me, I know *all* about /var/log.  In painfully intimate
detail. :)

The logs were _silent_.  Well, no, not quite, but certainly on anything
which could even conceivably have been related to any aspect of any part
of the problem.

Considering the scope of our firewalling and routing setup, quite
possibly... but... then again... it's been working, no reason it shouldn't
still be.
