A friend of mine has that game as just about the only hurdle (except
lack of experience) before switching to Linux full-time. Does it work
in plain Wine, and if so, how? Or is Cedega the only way to go?
Why not just turn to ET? It runs natively in Linux and it is far better
than
CS (I last played it when it was a HL1 mod, CS2, around 2000-01)
Games are not really interchangeable the way applications are. With
applications, the goal is getting something done, and whether it gets done
in Photoshop or GIMP doesn't really matter, as long as it gets done. With
games, the goal is to play that specific game. Even within a series, there
are enough differences that someone may prefer Super Mario Bros 3 instead of
Super Mario Bros 2, or Final Fantasy 7 instead of Final Fantasy 8, DDRMAX2
instead of DDR, etc.
In the specific case of Counter Strike, a primarily online game, there
may be a group of people the above mentioned friend plays with regularly,
and so to get an equivalent experience out of ET, you'd have to not only
convert that friend, but all of his/her friends as well. As an example, I
play CS:Source with a friend who plays it pretty seriously (competes in
regional tournaments and stuff), and while she'll play other games from time
to time, she'll always go back to Counter Strike as her "home" game. And
while I find CS:Source merely decent, and would personally be completely
willing to switch to ET, I get a lot of enjoyment from the social aspect of
playing with her specifically.
