[News] Microsoft: Expect Security Problems in Vista (and Pay Us for Protection)

Russinovich: Malware will thrive, even with Vista' UAC

,----[ Quote ]
| Despite all the anti-malware roadblocks built into Windows Vista,
| a senior Microsoft official is lowering the security expectations,
| warning that viruses, password-stealing Trojans and rootkits will
| continue to thrive as malware authors adapt to the new operating system.

But worry not. Microsoft /sells/ security separately (cheaper Editions may be
less secure as well).

Microsoft business security ready for prime time

,----[ Quote ]
| For smaller organizations, Microsoft is readying the release of
| System Center Essentials. These tools have a "little less capability,
| a lot more ease of use and a little lower price" than the enterprise
| System Center products, Ballmer said. System Center Essentials is
| due by the end of June, according to Microsoft's Web site.

Security at the Forefront

,----[ Quote ]
| Microsoft's new ad campaign for Forefront security products may
| be a noncompetitive event. "Why?" is the question.

|
| "Strangely for a late-to-market product, Microsoft hasn't been very
| aggressive in terms of the way they position Forefront versus competitors,"
| Jaquith said. "In fact, they could not have marketed Forefront in a more
| low-key way if they tried. I don't see John Thompson [Symantec CEO] or Dave
| DeWalt [McAfee CEO] getting on the hotline to Neelie Kroes [European
| Commissioner for Competitor] over this."

Symantec: Microsoft conflict of interest is damaging internet

,----[ Quote ]
| Symantec's chief executive has lambasted Microsoft for a dangerous
| conflict of interest as both the provider of an operating system
| and seller of software designed to secure its users.

|
| Thompson told RSA delegates: "You wouldn't want the company that is
| keeping your books to audit your books. The same logic should apply.
| You wouldn't want the company that created your company's operating
| platform to be the one that is securing it from a broad range of
| threats. It's a huge conflict of interest."
