Were they building such systems on non-proprietary platforms, it seems
likely that there could be far more SMBs using them, assuming, at least,
that they have any use for them at all.

They do require a good understanding of corporate processes, and also
require that a good deal of flexibility is built-in, otherwise they just
become a millstone for management, wasting far more time than they save.
