Oh come. According to Willy Boaster it all just worked 10 years
ago. What improvements were made?

What a load of garbage.
Only recently have the required codecs appeared for Linux. Only recently is HW
acceleration even remotely half good on Linux. Still thousands of people
stuck with ATI issues though. Only in the last couple of years have half
the multimedia programs started to be actually half decent. Amarok, for
example, excellent.
If the above is not true then we have to blame you and your kind for not
getting the message across. But then that is obvious to anyone who
follows your continual lies and SPAM.
