The facts of the matter are that OSS has no ability to compete for mindshare due to their generally poor functionality and lack of financial backing for promotions. Many products in many industries are primed in the distribution channels by means of introductory offers that are used to entice prospective buyers to become familiar with the product and software products do the same. Microsoft gives away VS Express and later sells the full feature Visual Studio.NET this way. Similarly they provide SQL Server Express and Mobile Edition at no charge in the expectation of eventual sales of the complete product.

OSS people have to invent negative terms to account for these practices since they have no other answer. You must appreciate how lame this tactic appears to most people.
