What was described in this article was something we in the
consulting game often call a 'Death March'. I've been called in
on a few in the early days of my consulting career. Management
sets completely unrealistic goals and deadlines, and then as
they train starts to go off the rails, they try to fix it by
bringing in a pile of consultants (which often just slows things
down as the consultants need ramp-up time). Ultimately,
something ships, but not without damage to a few careers or the
product (usually both).
I've learned to sniff out a Death March during the interview
process and avoid them now.
