This is precisely what I would expect Cisco to do. Their phones use an
"embraced & extended" version of H.323 which they call "skinny" - if you
look at Asterisk, you'll see that they have mostly reverse engineered
it. They've moved on to SIP for phone access, but if you use a
3rd-party SIP phone, they charge a licence fee on the call server which
assumes you've bought the most expensive Cisco SIP phone going, so
they've made it not worth using a 3rd-party phone. The joys of lock-in!
