[News] [Linux] Inexpensive Linux Laptops Could Be the Future

Is the desktop dead?

,----[ Quote ]
| The One Laptop Per Child program, which will be a free software flagship,
| is ample evidence of this trend. It is self-contained. Imagine trying
| to set up a One Tower Case, plus One Monitor, and also, One Keyboard,
| Mouse and Assorted Cables, Per Child program. Just trying to write it
| all down would be bad enough, but the delivery logistics would
| suddenly become horrific.

Laptops at half the price of mobiles

,----[ Quote ]
| The laptop will have an operating system (most probably Linux) and
| support all Word-related applications, a web browser and MP3
| capability. Currently, testing of boards have started and people
| involved in the project are certain that in the next month or two
| they would also finalise on the components of the laptop and the
| layout of the motherboard.

One Laptop per Child official criticizes WiMAX community

,----[ Quote ]
| As for innovation, Bletsas may have a point. "Right now, it is
| being targeted at big operators and spectrum regulation is a total
| mess. For innovation, we need a bottom-up approach, and right now
| WiMAX is moving in the opposite direction. Unless things change, I
| don't see a very bright future for WiMAX," he said.

After the Desktop -- What?

,----[ Quote ]
| I would suggest that the open source community should stop obsessing
| with the battle for the desktop, and start focusing on the battle for
| the platform that will replace it. As I have said before, the day
| will soon come when the notion of having to go to a particular
| machine on a particular room every time you need access to
| information or computer power will be as obsolete as the notion
| of having to go to the hand pump over the well in the front
| yard every time you need water.
