Ah yes, the infamous "make the Chinese pay" quote, originally from the
print copy of the July 20th 1998 edition of Fortune Magazine, citing a
presentation that pearly Gates and bunny Warren gave to business school
students at the University of Washington.

Here's the oldest surviving online citation I could find:

Oddly enough, that article pre-dates the print article by 18 days,
presumably because of the strange phenomenon where magazines tend to be
published anything up to two months ahead of their cover date.

Apparently the exchange was set to be shown on television (PBS) later in
that year. If it was, it'd be interesting to see it (and get it onto
GooTube).
