Vista got more expensive despite the fact that it's a downgrade. Microsoft must
move to subscription-based software and it already experiments with the
paradigm (in Africa and Asia), which is not as profitable and leaves them
behind (consider, e.g. Zoho, Google Apps).

The software market must evolve to align better with the production of hardware
and development of network infrastructure/software (Web-based software was
impractical 10 years ago because of speed and browser technology).

Microsoft is a dinosaur waiting to become extinct unless it changes. It
recently admitted this [1]. It tries to evolve now, but can it catch up
without breaking antitrust laws (which it already does break by leveraging a
desktop monopoly and making hostile takeovers by proxy, predatory deals, etc)?
It is already resorting to bribery and other forms of fraud, as illustrated in
the OOXML fiasco. There's also patent extortion and other corruption.
