Netflix comes to Linux desktop

,----[ Quote ]
| An alpha-stage, "social" media center distribution is bringing Netflix video
| downloads to Linux desktops for the first time, says an industry blog. The
| Boxee software aims to let PCs and other devices serve as unified gateways to
| social and media networking services, says Boxee.

Why Boxee Might (One Day) Make Me a MythTV Ex-Pat

,----[ Quote ]
| Boxee is bringing Netflix onboard. There are a few catches, and a few bits
| that are a little unclear, but this might lead, at the very least, to Boxee
| running alongside my MythTV installation.

Roku's Netflix Player: a hands-on review

,----[ Quote ]
| It's small and silent, sports an array of ports on the back but only one tiny
| white LED on the front, and it can help you spend hours of time in front of
| your TV -- and it runs Linux. It's the Netflix Player from embedded device
| specialist Roku, and we got our hands on it for a review of the service and
| the hardware.
|
| [...]
|
| Whether you are a Netflix addict or not, Roku's friendly cooperation with the
| open source community and the promise of an SDK add up to a good environment
| in which to explore video-on-demand. The Netflix Player is a good product
| now; opening it up to additional services will make it better, and working
| with the development community will make it even better still.

Not iPhone: Roku Netflix player software goes open source

,----[ Quote ]
| Remember the Roku Netflix set-top box that came out a little while ago? Well
| Roku has just released the code under the GPL, which got the MythTV community
| buzzing about getting its popular open source media center software onto the
| Roku box.

Netflix Player from Roku Uses Linux Tech

,----[ Quote ]
| Trolltech announced today that the new Netflix player from Roku utilizes its
| Qt for Embedded Linux. Qt for Embedded Linux was formerly known as Qtopia
| Core. The application is designed to allow manufacturers to build devices for
| one specific purpose.

Weekend Project: Get Your Open Source Media Center Groove On

,----[ Quote ]
| This media player is targeted at home theater PCs, set-top boxes, and is a
| favorite of many Linux users. It runs the GStreamer media framework, so all
| the media formats supported by GStreamer play automatically.
|

|
| Boxee is one of the more interesting open source media center projects I've
| seen. It's available in an alpha version, and you have to apply for an
| invitation to get it, but anyone can get it. I've used it in demo situations,
| and been very impressed with its slick interface, ability to mash up music
| and online video content, and how it works so well on HDTVs.

Boxee aims to shake up the home theater

,----[ Quote ]
| Based on what it does now, Boxee has high potential. The media center that I
| spend the most time with is MythTV, which by comparison is a royal pain for
| all media types other than recorded television. Boxee would benefit from the
| addition of a search function, but already its local content browser and
| media player are stable and easy to use. Accessing Internet content directly
| from the media center is far better than dropping out just to use a
| specialized app like Miro.
|
| Ronen describes the goal of Boxee as providing the "truly connected
| experience," noting "it just doesn't make sense that your media center
| experience is going to be disconnected from the rest of your online social
| activities." On that point, he is entirely right -- media center software
| sorely needs to be taken out of appliance mode and made as interactive as
| every other activity on the Internet. Keep an eye on Boxee; as the code
| matures, it may just change what you expect out of media centers, and you may
| want drag a PC up to the television to give it a shot.

Weekend Project: Boxee, Part 2

,----[ Quote ]
| I think Boxee is a great product. I have tried MythTV and some other media
| center products and I think Boxee has a good concept on their hands. It
| handles your collections of media very well and offers the possibility to
| share your activity with friends. Boxee may be the media center answer to
| Twitter.
|
| I intend to follow the Boxee team’s work and I look forward to the next
| release.

| versions for Ubuntu 7.10 and 8.04. we figured that between Gutsy Gibbon and
| Hardy Heron we will cover most of the Ubuntu users out there.

Feeling the heat at Microsoft

,----[ Quote ]
| A couple of years ago you reiterated that IBM was Microsoft's biggest
| competitor and you said not just on the business side, but overall. If I ask
| you who is Microsoft's biggest competitor now, who would it be?
|
| Ballmer: Open...Linux. I don't want to say open source. Linux, certainly have
| to go with that.
