Roy's quite right, the GPL is a very powerful licence, it makes use of
copyright law which seems to be reasonably harmonised across the world.

I've you're planning to do development, I'd suggest you get something
out in the open, say on sourceforge, fairly rapidly, as you might get
interested.  Some projects develop a wide following, some tend to remain
single-developer, but either way, the GPL is the superior choice of
licence, as it means that anyone else who works on the code and
redistributes is also must redistribute their additions, so that you
will get them back.
