As opposed to:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Installed_base

You see, software, as opposed to something physical like a car or hardware,
is subjected to complete transformation. Imagine being able to convert a
Benz into a Fiat within 20 minutes.

There is a reason why Microsoft so so stubbornly threatens (scare tactics)
OEM's that dare to preinstall GNU/Linux, in line with the demand of
customers. This gives developers the illusion that Linux is a small niche
that shouldn't be tarrgetted, which maintains that chicken-and-egg scenario.
It makes something so prevalent less countable. Even it's not quantifiable,
a lot is down to perception, however false it might be. Microsoft has played
that card for a while and more latterly Lenovo was the victim.

Best wishes,

Roy
