I don't think RedHat innovated them either; they've been
part of Gnome for awhile.  I don't think Gnome innovated
them.

At this point I'm not sure who did.  Win95 had its tray,
mwm had an option to hold opened windows.  NeXT had the
notion of "docking".

Oddly, Xerox Star did not have docking; icons were
put on a stippled background.  (Mentor Graphics had a
similar variant in their pre-8.0 software, though the
icons in MG's case had to do with documents and folders;
Star looks like it also put launchable programs thereon.
Modern desktops can have a similar mix, but also offer
quite a few other options.)

I have no idea what happened to the monk staring off
into space.  Apparently nobody else picked him up. :-)
