That's the impression I was getting. It sounds as though Solaris, AIX and
some BSDs are what you're surrounded by. I personally find it pleasant that
UNIX isn't harmed. Everybody lives in harmony, unless "balance-sheet
liability" FUD is spewed out and angers maintainers of mixed environments.
In due course, Linux will probably close and widen the gap (positively). The
same goes for MySQL. Just look at a role model like Firefox. There is no
reason why, given the momentum that builds up, open source alternatives will
become equivalents or even enhancements to existing proprietary software
that is mature. Just give time for performance and /perception/ to change.
FWIW, my only contact with Solaris is an FTP server I have been using
heavily over the years. BSD powers one of my sites, which is 6 years old.
Both are roughly as reliable as the Linux servers and desktops that I use.
