I believe that these 'open laptops' have been tested for Linux compatibility.
They are assumed to have a so-called Linux vocation, but different people
prefer different distributions.

I am aware of American brands that stock 'open laptops' as well. They are
easier to spot these days, but they often come with Lindows (Linspire AKA
"cheap Linux") and Red Hat; so it seems. If you go down this route, opt for
(Open)SuSE or Ubuntu:
