Luckily Debian, and therefore presumably Ubuntu, includes tools for
doing exactly that.  So the rookie sysadmin can get up to speed by
just reading the instructions.

Debian is a "sysadmin friendly" distribution, as opposed to a "user
friendly" one 8->
